React vs Vue vs Svelte: Choosing a Frontend Framework

A candid, no-hype comparison of the big three — where each shines, and what we actually reach for.

The framework war is over, and the answer is "it depends." All three build excellent UIs. The differences are in philosophy, ecosystem and how much the framework does for you.

React — the ecosystem

jsx
function Counter() {
  const [count, setCount] = useState(0);
  return <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}>{count}</button>;
}

React is the safe default: the largest ecosystem, the most jobs, the most libraries. It re-renders on every state change; you learn hooks and unlearn classes.

Vue — the ergonomics

vue
<script setup>
import { ref } from "vue";
const count = ref(0);
</script>
<template>
  <button @click="count++">{{ count }}</button>
</template>

Vue is gentler to learn and has built-in reactivity that tracks dependencies precisely — no re-render-everything. Excellent single-file components.

Svelte — the compiler

svelte
<script>
  let count = 0;
</script>
<button on:click={() => count += 1}>{count}</button>

Svelte compiles away — no virtual DOM, tiny bundles, minimal boilerplate. The most elegant of the three, with a smaller (but growing) ecosystem.

How we choose

text
Ecosystem + hiring  -> React
Speed of learning   -> Vue
Bundle size / perf -> Svelte
The framework matters less than you think. A great engineer ships on all three; a poor one produces bad code in React too. Pick one, go deep, and own your components.

For client work we default to React for its ecosystem, and reach for Svelte when bundle size or startup feel is the product. But we've shipped on all three — and the user never knows the difference.
